A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
