This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
