Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
